Knox College Wins Debating Competition
The Manchester Co-operative Credit Union (1977) Ltd. staged the final match of its 2004 Debating Competition on February 21, 2005 at the Golf View Hotel in Mandeville.
This annual event sees schools at the secondary level throughout the parish of Manchester vying for top prizes that are offered by the Credit Union. The 2004 competition was postponed in December, but resumed in January 2005 where it continued from the semi-final round and into the finals.
Debating the moot, Be it resolved that, “The Credit Union Movement can be considered a model financial entity based on its track record,” presented a keenly contested finals played between Spalding High and Knox College, the proposing and opposing teams respectively. At the end of the match Knox College emerged victorious with best speaker going to Monroe Wisdom, a member of the Knox team. Spalding High, the runner up team, competed well and gave a good account of themselves.
Prizes were presented to both teams which included the Mavis Campbell Trophy for the winning team, a Plaque for the second place team, a Plaque for best speaker, Share Certificate valued at $20,000.00 for the winning team, and also a cash prize of $10,000.00 to the winning school. Additionally, Share Certificates were presented to the coaches of the finalists while Share Certificates and Certificates of participation were also presented to all teams that participated in the competition.
The competition which had its genesis in 2000 has had exciting matches over the years with past winners including Bellefield High, deCarteret College and three times champions Knox College. Other participants in the 2004 competition included Porus High, Cross Keys High, Bishop Gibson High, and deCarteret College.
